SOCIAL HOUSING for barcelona aims to foster inclusive, low-impact forms of cohabitation whilst transforming an underused piece of city, into a public space for all and 63 flats for the community. This is achieved through a generous civic square on the ground floor, as well as a hybrid system of modular prefabricated elements and on-site construction for the housing units above.

The new civic square, catalyses social coherence and interaction. It includes a flexible community living room, a public library, a daycare centre and external spaces for play, exercise and gardening.
Construction phasing: on-site casting of modular frame and installation of prefabricated elements.
A rectilinear frame of low-carbon coloured concrete is cast with recycled demolition aggregate from the local masterplan.
A vaulted, lightweight slab system is installed, comprising terracotta panels.
Prefabricated timber wall panels with cork insulation, clipped onto the structure.
These repeated components, including modular floorplates, eliminate on-site fabrication and reduce cost and assembly time.
We have developed two adaptable typologies that inhabit an externally expressive 3m grid.
Type 1 flats are distributed over two floors. They offer spatial flexibility for families, students and flat-sharers.
Type 2 flats are distributed on a single level. They are designed to support ageing-in-place and residents with limited mobility.
