longboat is a dwelling by the beach in Lagos, Nigeria. Sitting on a flat linear plot measuring 12m wide by 70m long, it is imagined as a container framing the view, conceived as one space between inside and outside, living, landscape and sea.

The home is defined by three key building elements: 1. Two parallel walls framing the view out; white-washed and textured they are the backdrop for the life of the home to unfold in relation to the landscape. 2. Service cores which serve the common room/ heart of home, sit in the landscape analogous to pebbles in the sand, breaking the flatness of the site. 3. The roof made of thatch gives a sense of shelter over the site.

The design can be imagined through the following sequence: a. The two parallel walls define the footprint of the building which is 6.3m wide by 30m in length. b. A pre-fabricated modular timber construction for the primary element, the walls; allows for flexibility responding to client requirements programme and budget. c. Bedrooms spanning across the two long walls, are lifted upwards to create an unobstructed view out onto the beach. d. A large living room zone of unified gathering together and viewing out to the beach is created. e. Service zones/ vertical cores (pebbles), are cast, spaced at 6m intervals organise the plan and serve the long living space. These include functions such as: stairs, kitchen, WC, showers and storage. f. The roof unifies the space below and provides opportunity for variation of heights across the living zone below. g. Using the full length of site to create a long linear swimming pool for exercise and a water feature/ reflection pool, provides a continuity of water surfaces from the ocean, bringing the outside in. Further enhancing these inside-out relations, vegetation is planted from the interior to the exterior.

The home is imagined as a pregnant volume referencing David Hockney’s Boy Hidden in a Fish, nesting, living, eating, sleeping, playing and simply being, within the longboat and surrounding landscape.
